So how far would you go to avoid the door knob this winter?
Dettol approached me to help them spread the awareness of the winter germs and how to avoid the dreaded winter cold /flu that I keep seeing tweets about. We all know the horrid feeling of being ill, stuck in bed, blocked nose, temperature, body aches, sneezing and the list goes on....
Dettol provided me with a guide produced by the hygiene experts who have a range of solutions that kill 99.9% of bacteria on hands, surfaces, laundry and in the air.
Here are a few tips from Dettol to help you around your home.
Hands - before and after handling food remember to was your hands thoroughly using and anti-bacterial handwash such as Dettol NO-Touch Hand wash system, the unique hand sensor makes it the perfect partner when handling raw foods.
Surfaces should be regularly wash and dried using a clean cloth or alternatively you can use Dettol anti-bacterial surface wipes & spray cleanser. Both these products if used properly can kill 99.9% of bacterial. This includes areas like table tops, taps, chopping boards and fridge. The dettol products contain no bleach, taint or odour so they are fine to use around food preparation areas.
There are some simple practical steps you can take to minimise the bacteria in your laundry, while continuing to wash at environmentally friendly low temperatures.
When washing at low temperatures add a laundry sanitiser to kill bacteria and viruses. Dettol anti-bacterial laundry cleanser destroys 99.9% of bacteria, even at temperatures as low as 15 degrees.
Also once a week run your machine on a hot wash of 90 degrees to kill bacteria and leave machine door open to help prevent growth of mould. Clean door deals and detergent drawer regularly to reduce the build up of bacteria and slime.
Furnishing and Carpets - vacuum regularly and spray with dettol disinfectant spray to kill 99.9% of bacteria, including the flu virus.
Don't forget to use dettol anti - bacterial cleansing surface wipes on light switches / remote controls.
Toilet - always put the toilet seat down before flushing to prevent the spread of bacteria and regularly wipe around surface areas with anti bacterial wet wipes.
Regularly wipe down wall tiles and floor, again this can be done with the anti bacterial wet wipes.
Same goes for replacing towels frequently and cleaning your shower curtains with anti bacterial sprays.
Bath / Skinks / Taps.....I am sure you know what to use to tackle these areas! : )
Wash bedding weekly at 90 degrees to kill viruses, bacteria and dust mites. As previously mentioned you can add dettol anti-bacterial laundry cleanser if you are washing as low as 15 degrees.
Mattress, carpets and curtains - when vacuuming all soft furnishing you can spray with dettol disinfectant spray and you can spray this around your home like an air freshener to kill bacteria.
Interesting yet gross facts to share with you all...

Kitchen taps contain 13,227 bacteria per square inch.
100% of cloths recently failed microbiological tests and are ranked the dirtiest item in the home.
Family laundry washed at 40 degrees contained only 14% fewer bacteria than the dirty items that had not been washed at all.
Pets are one of the main carriers of germs into the home.
Within 8 hours, one bacterium on a damp cloth can multiply to six million.
The amount of bacteria on your fingertips doubles after you use the toilet and can stay alive on hands for up to 3 hours.
