DATE NIGHT: Oxford Bar Restaurant

When it comes to food options there is not really a lot to choose from in my area believe it or not and majority of what is available tends to be chain restaurants which is why I am always travelling to London for food. Simons Oxfords (Oxford Bar Restaurant) was a place I visited probably around 2 years ago and not been back since. I had a poor experience of customer service on my first visit which has put me off from returning...the sort of service where the waiter looks at you and decides if you are going to tip well or not and provides you with a crap service basically...I only picked it up when I noticed how great of a service she was giving to the "old / older" couples beside me...can't complain that I look young I guess when in fact I was 30 then!!!! Anyway I decided to go back and give this place another try because the food first time round was actually very good.
Anyway I am often tired after work these days so we decided to head over straight after work and it was quiet being just gone 6pm so we were seated straight away and put in a nice cozy corner table. Quick look at the menu and noticed they were offering a great value set meal until 7pm so I we both decided to go for that which was nice and simple. We ordered drinks and they arrived quickly while we were still looking at the menu.
TARTARE OF SMOKED SALMON dill, capers and crème fraiche dressing
Hubby loved this and I tired a bit of it and it was delicious but rich, a slice of bread to go with it would have been nice I think but again it was a generous portion.
PORK RILLETTES garlic crostini and apple puree
The garlic crostini mixed with the pork and apple puree was simply a perfect combo the only thing I would say is an extra slice of the garlic crostini would have been perfect as I has some pork left over but not enough crostini.
STEAK AND FRITES (£2.00 SUPPLEMENT) chargrilled thinly beaten minute steak, mixed leaf salad, fries and garlic butter (served pink)
Standard steak cooked very well, hubby enjoyed it very much since he loves steak.
Being a set meal I didn't expect too much from the fish pie but to my surprise the filling inside was very generous with around 3-4 large king prawns in which I wasn't expecting along with a few cuts of other fish. I would have liked maybe some tomatoes / cucumber mixed in with the salad but otherwise the portion was just right for me.
I did plan a 3 course but 2 courses was very filling so I didn't get a chance to try out the pudding but we will be back next time and definitely going for the 3 course with pudding. They offer a very good selection of choices from the main menu it's not cheap however if the quality is anything like the set meal then I would say it's worth the price or perhaps for that special occasion and we are heading back again this month for another early supper!
