Moving house is a stressful time and you’ve got a list of a million and one things to remember. Between packing up all of your stuff, getting it over to the new place, and sorting out all of the paperwork it’s easy to forget those tiny details that make life so much easier for you. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Here is a list of the most common things people forget to do when they’re moving house.
When you’re in a rush to pack everything up, you’ll probably just start shoving everything into boxes and loading them onto the van. It saves time when you’re leaving but it’s going to waste a lot of time at the other end. If you haven’t labelled any of the boxes you’ll find yourself unpacking everything to find the basic stuff that you need, and you can bet that whatever you’re looking for is right at the bottom of the last box that you look in. Always group stuff together by room and label the boxes, it’ll make the unpacking so much easier.
Change The Locks
When you get to the new house, you don’t know who still has keys. Maybe the old tenant’s to their neighbor or some family members. It’s not likely that anybody is going to use those keys but it’s still not ideal. If you’re worried about it and you want to rest easy, get somebody like SJO Locksmith to come and swap them out for you. It’s also a good opportunity to invest in some stronger locks that make it harder for anybody to break in. Then you won’t need to worry about anybody else coming into the house.
When you start organizing everything you’ll start to realize just how much stuff you’ve got. Not all of that is going to be needed right away and some of it might not fit in the new house at all, especially if you’ve got a growing family. If you get to moving day before you realize that you haven’t got space for half the stuff, you’re going to be in trouble. Always make sure that you do an inventory beforehand and decide exactly what’s coming and what’s not, then you’ve got time to organize some storage for the rest of the stuff before you decide what to do with it.
Moving On A Friday
Most people think that moving on a Friday is the best thing to do because then you’ve got the weekend to sort the new house out before you have to go back to work. The problem is, you’re not the only one with this idea so Fridays are usually the busiest day of the week for removal men. The last Friday of the month is also busier than any other Friday because a lot of sales are completed on that day. That means you risk delays and you’re likely to pay a higher price. It’s better to move in the middle of the week and take a few days off work to sort the place out.
It’s easy to overlook these small details but if you do, you’ll pay the price on moving day.
