Finding time for yourself as a mom can be a real challenge. You probably spend most of your time concentrating much more on the wellbeing of your children than on your own. Not taking time for yourself, however, can lead to you getting burned out and exhausted. Set a good example for your kids by taking the time for self-care and follow these easy tips to be the best mom you can be.
Fit mini exercise breaks into your day. If you have an idle five minutes, knock out a few quick exercises. Do some press-ups while you’re waiting for dinner to cook. Run up and down the stairs while you’re waiting for the kettle to boil. Do squats while you brush your teeth. Dance with the kids, or challenge your spouse to a sit-up challenge during the adverts of a TV show you’re watching.
Make time for your friends. Your friends are an important support network for you, and taking time out to hang out with friends is a very healthy way to get some time away from being a mother. Remember you don’t need to be in mom mode all the time. Fun with friends is important too.
Don’t sit up until the small hours every night. After the children are in bed, it’s easy to find yourself sitting up half the night so you can have some child-free time. While this is important, don’t let this impact your sleep. Make sure you’re in bed and asleep by a reasonable hour, so you wake up well rested and ready for another busy day of mom time.
Make exercise fun. If you’d rather poke out your own eyes than go to the gym, find a healthy activity that you actually enjoy. Take up running, join a class like dance or yoga, or see if your work has an after-work sports team you could join. If you enjoy it, you’ll be much more likely to stick to it.
Do something that’s just for you. Being occasionally selfish is a good thing, and helps you maintain some sense of you outside of being a parent. Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn? Expanding your skills is very rewarding and studying as a mom doesn’t have to be daunting. Whether you learn a language at an evening class or study for your degree online, you can keep learning and feel fulfilled.
Encourage your kids to join you in being active, keeping you healthy and teaching them good habits for later in life. Spend your weekend playing in the garden or go out on a family bike ride. Active days out are also great ways to spend quality time together as a family.
Manage your stress in a positive way. Find some quick and easy ways to soothe your stress. It could be going for a run, taking a gentle walk or relaxing in the bubble bath. Positive ways to ease stress is a healthy way to stay calm and relaxed when things get on top of you.
Cut out sneaky snacking. One of the risks of motherhood is the damage to your eating habits. Many moms end up adding a lot of extra calories to their diets by finishing of leftovers from children’s meals or joining in at snack time when you’re not hungry. Try and avoid this, and stick to healthy meals at the proper times.
Make a team of other moms to support each other. Are you friends with the mothers of your kids’ friends? Set up a regular meet up to chat about mom life, or to keep each other on track with health goals. Meet for coffee to talk about parenting troubles, or join an exercise class together for a break from the kids and boost your health.
Have some off screen time before bed. The blue light from your phone screen and the television stimulates your brain and may mean you struggle to drop off to sleep at night. Instead, put the phone down at least an hour before you go to bed. Instead, talk to your spouse, read a book or take a relaxing bath to unwind without a screen.
Stay hydrated. Being well hydrated is incredibly important. Drinking enough water can help you to stay more alert and concentrate better, and can even help you maintain a healthy weight.
Meal plan at the weekends. Plot out family meals for the rest of the week and get your grocery list ready. Knowing what’s coming will reduce food waste and can help you to stick to healthier eating habits if the ingredients are all ready to go in the fridge.
