Is your house reminiscent of grand central station in the mornings? Chaos everywhere you turn? You are not alone; most parents experience this type of turmoil, especially when their kids are young. However, there are things you can do to make the morning school run a little easier so that you all get out of the door on time. Here are some tips from an independent girls’ school in London.
Preparation is Key
Make sure you have a designated space for all school supplies, including book bags, coats and shoes. That way you won’t have to search the house for them in the morning; you’ll all know exactly where they are. It’s also very wise to make sure all preparation is carried out the night before, such as packed lunches, homework and letter signage. You could even lay out their clothes, and your own if you’re feeling super-efficient.
Put Yourself First
Try and get up and dressed before your children so that you’re not trying to multitask. There’s nothing worse than trying to go to the toilet or do your make-up with children demanding your attention. Focus on you first and foremost so that you can then focus fully on the kids, rather than trying to do both at the same time. If setting your alarm a little earlier means you also have to head to bed sooner on an evening then so be it; your body will thank you for it!
What do you feed your kids for breakfast? There’s absolutely no need to prepare scrambled eggs or pancakes in the morning as this will take up far too much of your time. Instead, consider giving them a piece of fruit or a muffin in the car on the way to school.
There are, of course, hundreds of other techniques to help speed up the morning routine. You could use rewards, tick off a checklist, or time tasks to music. Whatever you choose to do, make small changes here and there will make a huge difference.
