9 Tips to Stay Looking Young and Healthy

As well all know, ageing is a natural part of life. While many people understand that age doesn’t define beauty, it’s normal to want to hold on to your youthful attributes for as long as possible. This not only boosts self-esteem and confidence, but it can also have positive health implications.
Harvard Health recently reported on a London based study whereby they found a link between how young people felt and their actual life expectancy. Among the 6,500 people studied, those who claimed to feel three or more years younger than they actually were lived significantly longer than those who either felt their age or older than they were.
The explanations behind these links are tough to pinpoint, but some of the reasons are believed to be associated with the research candidates attitudes and actions regarding health. Diet and health preventative measures being a strong focus of those who felt younger.
There are many approaches to making you look and feel younger. From skincare to diet, and from medical procedures to exercise, experts claim that we can have an impact on how young we look.
Here are nine great tips, involving a variety of approaches, that can help you to stay looking young as the years go by.
Embrace a healthy diet
Diet has a tremendous effect on your mental and physical wellbeing. Physical and mental health, in turn, greatly impact how you look and feel.
Embracing a healthy diet will help keep your body, skin, eyes, lips, and hair healthy. Absorbing nutrients through food is the most natural way of treating your body and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The most obvious example of dietary importance is weight management. Optimising your diet from a nutrient and calorie standpoint helps maintain a healthy weight. Bad diets can lead to obesity and weight gain.
Something that many of you might not know about is the effect of diet on the skin. A healthy diet facilitates the production of collagen in the body. This is a type of protein that affects skin elasticity. High collagen production can result in smoother and softer skin.
Refined sugar, through glycation, breaks down collagen in the skin. This can result in skin wrinkling. Avoiding sugar and maintaining healthy dietary habits can help you look younger for longer.
Different types of diets are better suited to different people so do your research and find out what’s best for you. Some healthy foods that can impact ageing include:
  • Vitamin packed fruits and vegetables.
  • Omega-3 rich fish, like salmon.
  • Leafy greens.
  • Water (staying hydrated is key).
  • Natural green teas.
Good skincare routine
Your skin is the largest organ in your body and shows the most signs of ageing. As mentioned, diet impacts the health of your skin greatly. However, a daily skincare routine can have an even better effect.
The skin sheds daily, so regular exfoliation should be done to rid your skin of unwanted or dead layers. Be careful that you don’t over-exfoliate. Moisturiser is essential to keep the skin hydrated. Apply quality moisturiser every day to keep your skin smooth, elastic, and free of wrinkles.
Other skin care products are suited to the individual, so find what dermatological care regimen works best for your skin type.
Sleep and rest
If you catch a glimpse of your face after a poor night of sleep, you quickly realise why it’s often referred to as “beauty sleep.” It has a significant impact on our appearance and beauty. While sleeping, your body goes into recovery mode, which is crucial for keeping a youthful appearance.
For optimal beauty sleep, here are a few key tips:
  • Wash your face before you go to bed.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day, and keep water by your bedside.
  • Apply overnight moisturiser.
  • Use skin-friendly bed sheets and pillow covers.
  • Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep.
Exercise regularly
Exercise is one of the most important ways of keeping your body fit and healthy. Regular exercise keeps your muscles strong and burns calories, helping you maintain a trim physique. As you age, your body starts to naturally sag and fall in places, so the better shape you are in, the younger you are likely to look.
Consider a professional procedure.
There is sometimes a stigma around having an aesthetic procedure done. However, in many cases, these are the best choice to gain the type of look that you want. Some aspects of your appearance may be out of your control from a natural perspective. Why not consider a procedure from a plastic surgeon to enhance your appearance?
A facelift or breast augmentation procedure might be just what you need to inject some youth into your appearance.
Health supplements
While you might be struggling to absorb certain vitamins, minerals or other nutritious ingredients through your diet, it’s possible to supplement to fill in these gaps.
Vitamins and collagen supplements are commonly used by ageing women to enhance their skin. Other supplements can be used to increase energy levels or improve mood, which can greatly impact how you look and feel.
Anti-ageing supplements and products can be recommended by a doctor or specialist, so don’t hesitate to try some out.
Be smart when you’re in the sun
Although exposure to the sun has many benefits, over-exposure can be extremely dangerous. Spending a large amount of time in the sun can also dry out your skin and cause it to appear aged and wrinkly.
To stay looking young, be smart about sun exposure. Even if the weather is overcast and the sky is full of clouds, UV rays can be present and might be harming your skin.
Apply sunscreen daily and always remember to keep it topped up, particularly if you’re outdoors.
Curb your alcohol intake
Although there are benefits to moderate consumption of alcohol, it’s generally quite poor for your health. In terms of your appearance, excessive consumption of alcohol dehydrates your body. Dehydrated skin can lead to long term damage, and it can make you look a lot older than you are.
Adapt your hairstyle
As you get older, your hair is likely to change in several ways. Whether you experience diminished volume, colour, or quality, you might have to adapt your style to keep your youthful look.
Experiment with your hair colour and length. Consider lightening the overall colour, making thinning hair or skin wrinkling less obvious.
Alternatively, embracing your grey hair can give you a more natural glow. Shiny and healthy-looking greys can make you look healthy and vibrant, contributing to an overall youthful look.
