Repair Or Replace: What Should You Do With Appliances When Remodeling Your Kitchen?

The kitchen is one of the most expensive rooms in the house to remodel because you’ve got a lot of expensive appliances to replace on top of refitting all of the units and decorating. But if you are looking for ways to save money on your kitchen renovation, you might decide to keep your existing kitchen appliances instead of replacing them.

In some cases, that’s a good idea and it can save you a lot of money, but you have to remember that the kitchen is a functional space. If you continue using kitchen appliances once they are past the end of their useful lifespan, it can make life difficult for you. For example, if your refrigerator isn’t working properly, your food won’t keep properly. So, in some cases, you should replace your appliances, but how do you know when to keep them and when to buy new ones?

Are They Working Properly?

This is the most obvious question to ask when trying to decide what to do with your appliances. If they’re in perfect working order, why spend lots of money replacing them? However, the kitchen is a functional space and if the appliances don’t work, you don’t have much of a kitchen.

Having said that, there is an exception to this rule. If you are completely changing your kitchen and the old appliances don’t fit with the new aesthetic at all, you might decide to change them. After all, your kitchen should be both attractive and functional at the same time.

Are They Broken Beyond Repair?

We have a very relaxed attitude to throwing things out and replacing them these days, but before you get rid of any kitchen appliances, you should always check whether they are broken beyond repair. In many cases, items can be repaired quite easily. Companies like Melbourne Fridgeworks also provide handy tips on extending the lifespan of your appliances. Fixing and maintaining a kitchen appliance is a whole lot cheaper than buying a brand new one every time you have a slight problem with it. Not only is it cheaper, it’s also way better for the environment, especially where fridges are concerned because they are made using quite a lot of harsh chemicals and they take a long time to break down.

What Are The Running Costs?

This is something that people overlook, but the running costs vary a lot depending on how old the appliance is. New appliances are made to be way more energy efficient, meaning that they’re better for the environment and they save you a lot of money. So, even though it might seem like you are saving money by keeping old appliances, you could be spending more in the long run. If you can, check the energy efficiency rating on any old appliances and if it’s bad, consider replacing them. Consider the difference in running costs and the potential long term savings to see if it’s worth it.

As long as you answer these three questions, you should be able to make the right decision about your appliances.
